Korea is known for being a leader in ICT‚ from mobile to wireless networking to ultra-high definition television transmissions.
The country is also expanding its broadcasting territory through content exports and collaborations with stations around the world.
That's just a few of the many duties of the Korea Communications Commission.
Joining us to discuss the many challenging tasks Korea's top broadcasting regulator face during this age of broadcasting and telecommunications convergence is KCC Chairman Choi Sung-joon.

Let's start with your visit to Europe last month
You shared Korea's policy grounds during your meetings with the communication commission chiefs of the U.S.‚ U.K. and France.
What was your take on their foreign communications' policies and where does Korea stand compared with them. and what can we learn from them?
Those three countries you mentioned had similar concerns and the same ongoing issues we do‚ with one of which being net neutrality. We exchanged our guidelines on the idea‚ which means a free and open internet for anyone. Big data is another issue on the table for any country‚ as it has the potential to spur growth in many sectors‚ but there's also the downside risk of companies' collecting more personal information than they should. We also shared the guideline we established in December last year.

As for frequency distribution regarding UHD TV transmission‚ it's still a matter of debate in many countries‚ but most seemed to have allocated the 700MHz range for telecommunication purposes by the year 2020 or 2022.
We will also refer to those cases‚ with ongoing discussions on whether to allocate the range to UHD TV transmission or 5G telecom here in Korea.
We have also agreed that communication chiefs must cooperate at an international level to ensure personal information is protected.

And in that visit‚ you've presided Arirang TV signing contents and program exchanges with European stations.
In fact‚ Arirang is also slated to seal more of those contracts during President Park Geun-hye's visit to South America this week and enter TV platform at the UN HQ‚ which are in line with the KCC's move to export Korean broadcast contents overseas.
What are your goals in terms of content exports and how can your organization further support Arirang to expand its line-up in foreign channels?
One of the goals during our trip to Europe was helping Korean broadcasters enter European and South American markets.
Arirang TV has been pioneer expanding its reach overseas‚ and once again bore the fruit of its efforts by initiating a move to launch the channel on British Sky Broadcasting.
Sky is the biggest satellite operator in Britain and Arirang's addition to its lineup will help it make similar steps in other countries.

As for Spain‚ the country plays a pivotal role in providing broadcast contents to South America. Arirang's sealing of an MOU with RTVE of Spain will help the station expand its reach in South America. The Korea Communications Commission also pledges to support such efforts through cooperation with foreign communications regulators and broadcasters.
We've also noticed that Arirang TV helps foreign viewers better understand Korea and its culture through programs in English and other languages‚ both in audio and subtitles.

This year marks 70th anniversary of independence and separation of the two Koreas.
We know that KCC is also revving up efforts to prepare for the post-unification era in terms of broadcasting infrastructure starting with personal exchanges with Pyongyang.
