요약정보
Consumers nationwide are keeping a close eye on the cost of key produce at their local store.
Prices of vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage are expected to skyrocket following the widespread damage to farmlands due to the rainy season.
Fortunately‚ most people are still able to bear the prices these days.
"The prices seem okay‚ so I'm just buying a lot now even though I wasn't thinking about it before."
The prices of cucumbers and zucchinis are particularly sensitive as the growth of these crops is highly dependent on the amount of sunshine they receive.
Even though the monsoon front has yet to pass‚ prices have already been on the rise since two weeks ago.
According to data from the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation‚ napa cabbage and spinach saw price hikes of 1.1 and 12 percent‚ respectively.
The wholesale market price of fruits such as apples has also experienced an increase of more than two percent from the beginning of this month to the end of last week.
But analysts predict that consumers will be hit the hardest in the next two to three weeks as a growing lack of supply drives up prices.
"If there is a lack of sunshine‚ then large crops are not able to grow. Therefore if the volume of produce decreases while demand remains high‚ then prices have no where to go but up."
Extreme weather and natural disasters significantly increase the risk of price instability in the market.
It's a big concern among both farmers and consumers as the rain continues to pour down.
