In the aftermath of April's ferry disaster it's no surprise that the number of passengers by ship tumbled 26 percent in May from a year earlier.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries that represents a drop from nearly 2 million to 1.5 million passengers.
In particular‚ the number of ferry passengers to Korea's southern-most Jeju Island plunged by nearly half.
The ministry attributes the overall drop to public fear of ferry travel after the tragedy‚ but also to the Sewol-ho's operator‚ Chonghaejin Marine Company‚ being suspended from operating the Incheon-Jeju route.
Meanwhile during the ongoing parliamentary probe into the ferry disaster the Justice Minister said based on their findings thus far it is 'unlikely' that the fugitive owner of shipping firm had escaped overseas.
