요약정보
United from two countries with tremendous economic disparity Germany has faced and overcome many challenges after the Berlin Wall‚ its symbol of division‚ came down twenty years ago.
Reunification confronted East and West Germany with the reality of cultural and economic differences that had to be overcome to help Germany become a united economic powerhouse.
And to turn what Germans call a "miracle" into success for the future Germany has spent well over 2.8 trillion US dollars to help rebuild desolated regions especially in the former communist East.
[Interview : Roland Remeler‚ Stuttgart resident] "Eastern Germany is still very run-down compared to the West so I think residents of western Germany should contribute in helping reconstruct the East."
Following reunification‚ which ended four decades of German division a "solidarity tax" was introduced in 1995 to fund the bill for reconstructing eastern Germany’s depleted infrastructure.
The so-called solidarity tax is levied at a rate of 5.5 percent of the assessed amount of both personal and corporate income taxes.
And although Germany still faces unsolved social problems and economic disparity the surface changes in eastern Germany are highly visible due to the hard work of its citizens.
[Interview : Hartmut Koschyk‚ Deputy Finance Minister of Germany
] "The solidarity surcharge was an investment in the future."
Meanwhile back in August President Lee Myung-bak proposed a special tax to cover the future costs of the possible unification between the two Koreas which experts say that Korea still has time to prepare for and that Korea could learn many lessons from Germany's unification.
