요약정보
Trade officials from Korea and the United States are set to iron out their differences over a bilateral free trade agreement for the third time this year.
More than 200 Korean trade representatives are in the U.S. for four days of tug-of-war which begins Wednesday.
Nam Kiyung has more.
It's back to the negotiating table for Korean trade officials as part of ongoing talks to seal a free-trade deal with the U.S by the end of this year.
The two sides will meet in Seattle for four days beginning Wednesday‚ devoting their attention to which business sector to open and how soon leading eventually to an item-by-item breakdown of zero-tariff trade.
Led by Seoul’s chief negotiator‚ Kim Jong-hoon‚ a Korean delegation of more than 200 officials is in the U.S. for the third round of FTA talks.
The focal points of discussion are broadly categorized into the three areas of agriculture‚ textiles‚ and other goods such as automobiles and pharmaceuticals.
Upon arriving in Seattle‚ the Korean trade representative said that Seoul will not open its rice market implying the staple grain should be excluded from the FTA.
The U.S. has demanded that Korea gradually scale back tariffs on rice and other agricultural goods over the next 10 years.
Last month Seoul submitted tariff concessions to Washington‚ proposing that out of more than 1‚500 Korean farm products over 280 be granted exemptions.
This means they're either excluded from the FTA agenda‚ or subjected to tariff cuts over an extended timespan.
Heated discussions are also expected in other sectors as well.
In the case of textiles‚ the U.S. wants to safeguard its fabric market‚ while Korea is pushing for aggressive tax cuts‚ and zero tariffs within five years.
The U.S. which is a heavy importer of Korean autos wants Seoul to overhaul its criteria for levying taxes on American cars to reflect the price of a vehicle and not the size of its engine.
At the latest FTA talks‚ the two sides will try to hammer out a deal on medical drug reimbursement and products made in North Korea's Gaeseong complex.
Seoul and Washington are hoping to conclude FTA negotiations by the end of this year‚ so the pact can be ratified by the summer of 2007.
