The construction of a new naval base on Baengnyeong Island in the West Sea has received the go-ahead from the local Incheon government.
The Korean Defense Ministry's new base‚ spanning over 24-thousand square-meters‚ will act as a docking port for naval ships and bolster military presence over South Korea's five northwestern islands near the inter-Korean maritime border and will eventually be able to accommodate a squadron-sized unit of 100 sailors.
Construction is set to be complete by 2014 at a cost of over 36-and-a-half million U.S. dollars.
