The French daily‚ Liberation‚ has dubbed South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island‚ located in the West Sea near the border with the North‚ as the tensest region on the Korean Peninsula.
In an article published on Wednesday‚ the French daily said that‚ even after almost a year since North Korea's attack‚ the island has not fully recovered from the scars of the last year's bombardment.
According to the paper‚ the South Korean government has put up signs to mark where the North's artillery shells exploded and three buildings that were destroyed will be left as they are to retain public awareness of the attack.
The paper said that‚ despite the South Korean government's claim that everything on the island has returned to normal‚ Yeonpyeong has now turned into a military base.
The daily noted that the island has been heavily fortified since the attack‚ with the some 2-thousand military personnel on the island now outnumbering the number of residents.
The article goes on to say that the fortification of Yeonpyeong demonstrates the weakness of the armistice that ended the Korean War many decades ago.
North Korea shelled the South Korean island last November‚ killing two civilians and two South Korean Marines.
