요약정보
Boryeong in South Chungcheong Province is famous for its beautiful beaches and mud.
And as the hot weather approaches‚ both local residents and foreigners visited the city to enjoy the summer heat at the annually held Boryeong Mud Festival.
[Reporter : Oh Jee-hyun
jhoh@arirang.co.kr] "The festival will run until next Sunday and despite the heavy rain that has continued over the past three weeks‚ more than two million people are expected to participate in the event."
This is the festival in Korea which draws the largest number of foreigners.
According to Boryeong City‚ roughly 380-thousand people visited the beach on the first day alone‚ with 50-thousand of them being foreigners.
And visitors took part in about 50 programs and activities the festival has to offer‚ such as mud sliding and mud fights.
[Interview : Nick Prado‚ English teacher] "The best thing about the festival is just acting like a little kid‚ getting covered in mud and not really caring and just going wild. It's good."
[Interview : Koo Ji-hae‚ Gwangju resident] "I came with my friend. We went on the banana boat and we get to meet a lot of foreigners here. It is so much fun. I also hear the mud is good for our skin and this makes things more exciting."
The highlight of the day was the mud mob scene‚ where mud was sprayed onto Daecheon Beach.
People enjoying their day out in the sun gathered and danced to the music to cool themselves under the cold mud.
[Interview : Koo Moon-hoe‚ Tourism Department Chief
Boryeong City Hall] "Foreigners seem to enjoy this festival because they can take part in many different activities‚ feel the mud and mingle with people from around the globe."
The festival has generated 55 billion won‚ or roughly 52 million US dollars‚ in economic benefit in the region and the figure is expected to increase this year.
And authorities are working to further develop this festival into a global summer event‚ by listening carefully to what participants have to say after their experiences here.
