Key US lawmakers have voiced their opposition to resuming food aid to North Korea.
Japan's Secretary General of the Parliamentary League‚ Jin Matsubara‚ quoted Jim Webb‚ Chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee‚ and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen‚ Chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee‚ as saying that the US should not provide food aid to North Korea.
Matsubara says the US lawmakers' comments came during a recent meeting with members of the Japanese Diet in Washington.
The Japanese lawmaker added that Webb and Ros-Lehtinen made it clear to the US State Department that even with very strict monitoring systems in place‚ there was no way to insure the food could be distributed to the ordinary people in North Korea.
