Tongyeong is a beautiful port city located in the southernmost part of Korea. It is famous for being the birthplace of the master composer‚ Yun Yi-sang [윤이상].
A maestro of contemporary music‚ he has some 150 pieces credited to his name‚ including the opera "Sim Tjong‚" [심청] which premiered as the opening program for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

] "Yun Yi-sang's compositions are unique applications of Korean traditional musical techniques with Western musical instruments. Many performers appreciate his compositions which are widely acknowledged."
The annual Tongyeong International Music Festival began in 2000 to commemorate Yun Yi-sang's life. The entire world is enjoying the classical music festival that takes place in the composer's hometown!
A music academy was established in 2005 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Yun Yi-sang's death. Its objective is to deliver the best music education to Asia's brightest musicians.

This year‚ students were selected by video auditions. There was intense competition among students from all over Asia.

auditions. From them‚ 64 students from 4 countries were selected
to attend the academy this year."
Korea's top names in the music field rolled up their sleeves to teach the young musicians!
Besides classes‚ both teachers and students even get to share the same stage.

This year's academy features a new class! It is the orchestra section‚ a first time for the academy!
And with this new section comes along a new artistic director‚ Alexander Liebreich!
Most music education programs focus on individual performances. However‚ in the orchestra‚ all musicians have to play in order to harmonize and deliver a successful performance. The finale of the music festival will be a performance by this very orchestra.

Orchestra members from Germany came to Tongyeong to act as teachers for the orchestra section!
The teachers take part in teaching the entire ensemble‚ as well as conducting individual lessons. They can't help but enjoy teaching as they watch their students improve.
