The South Korean military said today it has found three wooden box mines that drifted ashore from North Korea due to the recent torrential downpour.
Two were discovered in waters off the west coast near Incheon and the other on the east coast off Gangwon Province.
A box mine‚ in general‚ is slightly bigger than an adult's hand and usually contains around 200 grams of explosives and can easily be detonated under pressure‚ or if the lid is removed.
One such mine killed a South Korean national last year.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff have warned to refrain from touching suspicious containers made out of wood or plastic and to contact the police or military if they find something suspicious.
