The Korean government will dispatch more than a dozen members of the Navy's Underwater Demolition Team to the United Arab Emirates.
A government official said on Sunday that Seoul plans to send around 17 UDT troops in July along with the second batch of soldiers to the Ahk Unit‚ the Korean special forces currently operating in the Middle Eastern nation.
The UDT soldiers are expected to help train UAE forces.
The official added that the UAE asked for the dispatch after they heard about the Korean Navy's successful rescue operation on the Samho Jewelry cargo shipwhich was hijacked by Somali pirates in January.
Some critics claim the deployments are a return for a nuclear power plant deal that Korea won 2 years ago‚ but others have welcomed the news. saying the dispatch will strengthen ties between the two nations.
