Korea's Board of Audit and Inspection plans to select some 20 universities in the country that will go under a preliminary examination starting early next month.
This is ahead of a full-scale audit set for August on the nation’s 200-odd universities and colleges aimed at looking into overall finances of the post-secondary education system with a particular focus on the way they set tuition levels.
The subject of the preliminary inspection will be chosen based on the comprehensive data on the universities' size of the accumulated reserves‚ dependency on tuition fees and the recruitment rate of students.
The move comes amid a growing public outcry over skyrocketing tuition fees.
