The Asan Institute for Policy Studies] "I think the security situation is very tense‚ perhaps much tenser than it has been for sometime‚ but I think it's also in a sense back to the way it has always been.
More specifically I think for quite some time for the past 10 to 15 years…Koreans‚ South Koreans especially have been living under the impression that somehow the security situation has drastically improved.
But I think the events of the past year or so especially the sinking of Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island‚ much of it at least perceptually is much more of a deterioration from what it has been over the past 10 to 15 years."

kangsh@arirang.co.kr] "In dealing with North Korea‚ I know that you use a term "managing a permanent crisis‚" given the situation what do you think is the best course of action for Seoul to deal with Pyeongyang today[Interview : Hahm Chai-bong‚ President
The Asan Institute for Policy Studies] "I think by now we have tried almost everything‚ we have tried confrontation‚ we have tried engagement‚ we have tried investing in North Korea‚ we've tried giving humanitarian aid.
So I think by now our policy makers should have a very good sense of what kind of policies produce what kind of results.
I think maintaining a very pragmatic‚ realistic approach or policy toward North Korea is very much warranted. We should not be swayed by romantic ideas of nationalism for instance."
[Reporter : SEOKHO] "You hosted many conferences and forums on nuclear issues and South Korea-North Korea issues‚ with big names like Gary Samore and Victor Cha visiting your own institute‚ having discussed many issues in depth with those people outside of Korea.
Do you think there's a lot of differences in opinions how to approach the issues and would there be something that you would like the other experts around the world to know about our distinct situation in Korea."

The Asan Institute for Policy Studies] "I I think it's always very instructive for both sides to share opinions‚ views on defense and national security‚ but at the same time it's very important that we share our views on domestic political situations as well.
So I think it's very helpful when such important decision makers from the United States as those you've mentioned‚ Gary Samore and others come to Korea‚ they see for themselves what the situation is‚ and they hear from our leaders in various fields; it certainly is very very helpful."
