A growing number of multicultural families in Korea is changing the nation's demography.
According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security‚ the number of multicultural children‚ or children born between a Korean parent and a foreign parent‚ and children born in Korea between two foreign parents currently stands at more than 150-thousand.
That's up more than 29-thousand children from last year and a 160 percent jump from 2009.
The majority of the children‚ around 126-thousand‚ are the offspring of interracial couples‚ while nearly half of the foreign parents are ethnic Chinese with 37 percent from Southeast Asia.
Gyeonggi Province had the largest number of these young multicultural inhabitants with around 38-thousand‚ closely followed by Seoul with some 25-thousand children.
There are currently around 1.3 million foreign residents in Korea‚ which is 2.5 percent of the total population of the nation's registered citizens.
The rate of growth for foreign residents has been posting 20 percent growth every year up until 2009‚ when it dropped to three percent due to the global financial crisis.
However‚ the number has shown an increase last year.
An official from Seoul's public administration ministry said the government is planning to introduce new policies to better accommodate the growing number of multicultural children.
