Arirang is not only the name of this channel but is also a very famous Korean folk song‚ considered by some to be the unofficial national anthem of Korea.
So‚ this next story will come as a shock to many Koreans.
China has designated the song as that country's national intangible cultural asset.
Beijing's reasoning is that Arirang is a song treasured by their Chosunjok minority ethnic Koreans who are Chinese nationals.
In response‚ Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration vowed to address the issue and will ask UNESCO to give "Arirang" the status of Korea's intangible cultural asset.
