The United States and Japan agreed to work together to head off additional provocations by North Korea and persuade Pyeongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons programs.
During the high-level meeting of defense chiefs and top diplomats from the US and Japan the two sides also said they will bolster a trilateral alliance with South Korea.
The so-called two-plus-two meeting was attended by US Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton‚ US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates‚ Japan's Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto and Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa.
Clinton expressed hope for inter-Korean dialogue. adding that Washington remains committed to deterring further provocative acts by North Korea.
The two allies also formally acknowledged that they won't be able to relocate a US air base on Okinawa by the original 2014 deadline.
[Interview : Robert Gates‚ US Defense Secretary] "We decided to remove the deadline of 2014 for its completion but in order to avoid the continued use of the air station‚ we also confirmed that we shall strive for the earliest possible relocation‚"
Meanwhile‚ Clinton is scheduled to hold talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan in Washington on Friday.
