요약정보
With Thursday being the final day for candidate registration and less than two weeks until the party convention on July 4th‚ seven candidates are in the running to lead the ruling Grand National Party and the 169 out of 299 seats under its control.
The first to declare his candidacy was Park Jin‚ a third term lawmaker from Seoul‚ who defended his seat from current main opposition Democratic Party Chairman Sohn Hak-kyu three years ago.
Park said he is running to stop the GNP's drift into populism.
[Interview : Park Jin‚ GNP chair candidate] "Korean people are demanding that we‚ the GNP‚ lose our arrogance and work again to win their hearts back."
Fourth-term legislator and chairman of the foreign affairs and trade committee‚ Nam Kyung-pil‚ is also in the running to lead the GNP.
Calling himself the representative of reform movements‚ Nam called for new politics that will solve problems for the people‚ rather than generating new ones.
[Interview : Nam Kyung-pil‚ GNP chair candidate] "I will not step back this time. As the leader of reform movements‚ I will make sure a new and innovative GNP is born."
A two-term lawmaker from Daegu who belongs to the pro-Park Geun-hye faction‚ Yoo Seung-min‚ has also entered the race.
The only candidate whose home district is outside of the Seoul metropolitan area said he will rescue the lost conservatism within the party.
And a four-term lawmaker from Seoul Hong Joon-pyo declared his candidacy‚ saying he has a close relationship with President Lee Myung-bak and can guide the party through troubled times.
Hong was a member of the GNP supreme council before his resignation in April along with two-term lawmaker Na Kyung-won.
Na is the only female candidate in the race‚ and says that she hopes to restore people's trust in the GNP and the conservatives and called for the party to move beyond factional divisions.
And Na's law school classmate‚ third-term lawmaker Won Hee-ryeong‚ is also vying for the top job.
Won said he will not run for a National Assembly seat next year in order to concentrate on reviving the troubled party.
The seventh candidate for the post is Kwon Young-se‚ a third-term moderate from Seoul.
Kwon is calling for new faces and ideas to guide the GNP into 2012‚ as well as an attitude of humility and urgency among party members to remain on top.
[Interview : Kwon Young-se‚ GNP chair candidate] "We are surrounded by people trying to save themselves‚ while in the meantime doing great harm to our party."
The seven candidates‚ all in their 40s and 50s‚ will compete to win support of some 210-thousand delegates on July 4th‚ as well as trying to head the list in a national survey.
With a new rule allowing a delegate to vote for two candidates‚ the race for party chair is expected to be a fierce battle.
