Korean Minister of Strategy and Finance Bahk Jae-wan said for the second half of 2011 the government should focus on improving the livelihoods of the general public and boosting domestic demand.
The finance minister's remarks came at an economic policy coordination meeting on Wednesday‚ ahead of the announcement of the government's economy management plan for the rest of the year later this month.
Although Korea's economy has been rebounding quickly from the global recession thanks largely to stimulus measures and strong exports‚ Bahk said the recovery has yet to filter down to the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
Thus‚ he called for taming inflation and creating jobs‚ while improving the domestic demand base through developing the service sector.
Further‚ Bahk stressed the importance of improving economic fundamentals in order to buttress the economy against external uncertainties‚ especially with the euro-zone financial crisis looming large.
To that end‚ he said it is necessary to manage household debt and marginal companies at all times.
While urging the government to expand its support for the underprivileged and the needy within its fiscal capacity‚ he said such efforts should not be overdone‚ since indiscriminate welfare populism puts the nation's fiscal soundness at risk.
