요약정보
A world seen through the eyes of American actor Richard Gere.
He is currently in Korea for his photo exhibition‚ the "Pilgrim‚" at Seoul Arts Centre.
While starring in more than 40 Hollywood movies‚ Gere has also been at the forefront of helping the disadvantaged in society‚ running The Gere Foundation and fighting for basic human rights.
The exhibition is composed of a portfolio of 64 works that the actor took himself in Tibet and other areas in the Himalayan region‚ as well as other pieces donated by 24 renowned photographers who sympathize with Gere's international charity work.
The "Pilgrim" has already toured 20 cities in 11 countries‚ but this is the first time the exhibition has come to Korea.
[Interview : Richard Gere‚ Actor] "You know the first time that I started thinking of actually coming here was recently when I've been going to Mongolia. And it was peculiar how the last time I was coming through on the way to Mongolia‚ the request came through to me to do a show here in Seoul and I thought that was kind of a magical request."
Some 30 years ago‚ the 62-year-old actor converted to Buddhism and his photographs are a clear reflection of Buddhist values.
In fact‚ one of the first things he did after arriving in Korea was visit the main Buddhist temple in the nation's capital.
At the Jogye Temple in downtown Seoul‚ the actor practiced his beliefs and met with the executive chief of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order.
Accompanied by his wife and young son‚ Gere was invited to tour the temple's museum and experience Korean Buddhist culture.
[Interview : Richard Gere‚ Actor] "The Jogye form of Buddhism‚ which is very close to Zen‚ that was actually the first form of Buddhism that I studied. It was Japanese Zen‚ but I'm finding out that it's quite close to the Korean form."
During his six-day visit‚ the star of "Pretty Woman" will further experience Korean Buddhist culture by participating in a temple stay program at Tongdo Temple in Yangsan‚ South Gyeongsang Province before he leaves the country on Saturday.
