The Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced tougher laws to stop the pharmaceutical industry from paying kickbacks to doctors.
Under the laws‚ which go into effect immediately‚ doctors who accept rebates from drug companies will be banned from practicing medicine for up to a year.
Before‚ they were suspended for just two months.
Late last year‚ the Korean government launched a system that penalizes both drug companies and doctors involved in illegal rebates.
And officials hope the stronger penalties will get drug companies to focus more on research and development instead of sales and marketing.
