A North Korean cargo vessel suspected of transporting missile technology to Myanmar was reportedly forced to turn back two weeks ago after the United States and its allies in the region intercepted it for inspection in international waters.
The New York Times reported that the vessel‚ registered as M/V Light in the Central American country of Belize‚ was stopped by the US Navy destroyer McCampbell south of Shanghai‚ but the North Koreans on board refused to allow the inspection and then fled.
Following Pyeongyang's second nuclear test in 2009‚ the UN Security Council imposed sanctions that permit searches of North Korean ships thought to be carrying goods related to nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.
In 2009‚ the "Kang Nam‚" presumably traveling to Myanmar with WMD-related materials‚ was also forced back to the North.
