The Korean navy's Cheonghae unit‚ currently conducting an anti-piracy mission in waters off the coast of Somalia‚ helped save the life of a sailor from a serious illness.
According to the Korean military on Thursday‚ the Cheonghae unit received an emergency call from an Antigua merchant vessel sailing near the Gulf of Aden on Monday to help a crew member who was experiencing serious stomach pains.
Four medical assistants‚ including a naval sergeant from the Cheonghae unit‚ were immediately sent to the ship and determined that the patient was suffering from acute peritonitis and needed surgery immediately.
The patient was then sent to the US aircraft carrier Enterprise due to its superior medical facilities.
The Korean military said that the international naval forces' cooperation made it possible to save the patient's life.
