The Hanjin Tianjin container vessel. that came close to being hijacked by Somali pirates on Thursday‚. has returned to its planned route towards Singapore.
The cargo's operator Hanjin Shipping says after inspecting the freighter for damage‚ the 20 crew members set sail for their destination‚ escorted by Korean navy destroyer Choi Young.
And all 14 Koreans and six Indonesians‚ as well as their vessel‚ are reported to be in good condition.
Meanwhile‚ Korea's Cheonghae Unit‚ which protects international vessels from piracy in the Gulf of Aden‚ found three AK-47 rifle bullets and bare footprints inside the captain's bridge and in front of the safety compartment.
This adds weight to speculation that the pirates failed in their attempt to kidnap the crew.
There is also evidence that the pirates attempted to take control of the ship's engine and communication equipment.
Back here in Seoul‚ the Joint Chiefs of Staff briefed lawmakers on Friday‚ saying that findings from the investigation show about 16 armed pirates raided the freighter‚ which prompted the crew to quickly hide inside the vessel's emergency shelter‚ or citadel.
In addressing the communication cut-off after members on board hid in the citadel‚ Hanjin Shipping said it is looking into equipping the shelter with a satellite communication device soon after the container vessel returns to Korea.
The military then revealed that the Cheonghae Unit's Lynx helicopter located one command ship and two other boats operated by pirates surrounding an Italian cargo ship that also came under attack on Thursday.
Being just 40 kilometers away from where the Korean ship made an emergency stop the day before‚ officials added although the pirates have not been spotted‚ the same group had likely tried to kidnap the Hanjin Tianjian.
