Since 2005 both Seoulites and tourists have been making wishes by throwing "lucky coins" into Palseokdam‚ a pond located at Cheonggye Stream.
And on Monday‚ over 6-thousand foreign coins from 51 countries were donated to the Korean Committee for UNICEF.
Just over a quarter of them were Japanese‚ followed by Thai‚ Chinese and American coins.
The city of Seoul had previously donated domestic coins over the past six years but foreign ones were kept until they reached a certain amount before being exchanged.
UNICEF plans to use the coins to help fund health‚ nutrition and education initiatives for children in developing countries.
