President Lee Myung-bak participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for initial works at the proposed nuclear power plant site in Braka‚ about 300 kilometers west of the capital Abu Dhabi.
The ceremony follows the deal signed between the two countries back in 2009 when Korea won the 40-billion US dollar bid to build four nuclear plants in the Middle Eastern country‚ its first international contract.
Korea will take on the full scope of works and services‚ including engineering‚ procurement‚ construction‚ nuclear fuel and operations along with maintenance support.
President Lee stated that Korean-style nuclear plants are the best in terms of safety and effectiveness and that it will serve as a good model case in the UAE.
He also stressed that the construction will help boost bilateral relations between the two countries.
The first of the 1‚400 megawatt reactors is set to be up and running in 2017 with the others by 2020.
