요약정보
Even as the Japanese government rushed to evacuate tens of thousands of people living near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on the country's east coastconcerns about the affects radiation leaks are going to have on the local community are growing.
Experts saythat four different types of radio scopes including iodine‚ cesium‚ strontium and plutonium‚ which could have escaped from the plants‚ pose a range of potentially serious health risks.
Exposure to these materials can lead to a wide range of cancers.
According to epidemiologists. strontium and cesium are extremely harmful.
Compared to iodine which tends to cause thyroid cancer strontium generally accumulates in the bones and teeth‚ and may lead to leukemia in the long term.
Cesium on the other hand‚ tends to float inside the body and contaminate organs which would cause mutation of human cells and create solid tumors including liver‚ kidney and pancreas cancers.
Units of measurement called‚ Roentgen equivalent man‚ or rems are used in assessing radiation levels.
The average background exposure that most people absorb by going about their day-today life is roughly 130 to 150 milli-rems per year.
Experts say people exposed to 100 full rems would experience nausea‚ while 200 rems and above would cause hair loss and vomiting.
The fatality rate stands at about 50 percent for an exposure of over 300 rems ….the rate at which no one could live is 600 rems.
Researchers have collected a great deal of information regarding the risks of radiation from studying survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the World War Two as well as the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine.
