The US National Intelligence Director James Clapper claims that North Korea sees its nuclear arsenal as its only leverage.
Clapper told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday that Pyeongyang will continue to play its nuclear card as it is the only tactic the regime can use to attract attention and seek international recognition as a nuclear power.
The US spy chief also said although there is a low probability of a conventional North Korean attack against South Korea at this time he warned that the North's history of unprovoked military provocations shows. that it is capable of conducting acts of unexpected aggression at any time.
Meanwhile‚ the US Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lieutanent General Ronald Burgess said that North Korea may have already developed nuclear warheads that are small enough to be mounted onto missiles and aircraft.
Burgess added that the US expects that the North will continue to test-launch missiles including its Taepodong-2 intercontinental ballistic missile to refine its performance.
He admitted that with further tests Pyeongyang could develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland of the US.
Clapper backed up Burgess' claim saying that Iran and North Korea are of great concern to Washington as they pose a direct threat to the continental United States.
