President Lee Myung-bak emphasized the significance of unity in the country's military on Monday saying that it is one of the key pillars to national defense reform.

In his 60th bi-weekly radio address‚ President Lee mentioned his participation in the nation's first joint commissioning ceremony last week and spoke highly of the open-mindedness‚ flexibility and spirit that the young officers demonstrated despite differences in military branch affiliations and job duties.
He also revealed text messages he received from soldiers following the event that reassured him of their determination to safeguard the country as well as their parents who expressed mixed feelings of pride and concern about their children's service.
President Lee added that Korea's military is emerging as one that contributes to world peace beyond just the protection of the country and peace on the Korean peninsula pointing out that more than 1‚4-hundred troops are currently in 17 countries.
He went on to express his full trust in the military noting that it will further enhance the honor and prestige of the nation's armed forces overseas citing successful operations against Somali pirates and the orderly evacuation of Korean nationals from Libya.
