Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara has stepped down in response to mounting pressure from both the opposition and within the ruling Democratic Party of Japan over his acceptance of political donations from a non-Japanese citizen.
Media reports say the top diplomat‚ who was widely expected to succeed Prime Minister Naoto Kan‚ faced strong criticism after he professed on Friday to receiving a total of 200-thousand yen‚ or more than 2-thousand US dollars‚ from an ethnic Korean woman.
Though he apologized for breaking Japan's political funds law‚ which bans donations from foreigners‚ he claims that he was not aware of the money until recently.
If convicted of intentionally violating the law‚ Maehara could be sentenced to prison or slapped with a fine.
