A recent report says the level of environmental hormones in breast milk in Korea is lower than that of Europe and the United States.
The Korea Food & Drug Administration tested phthalate concentrations in the breast milk and urine of 106 mothers and found the content to be below safe levels.
The agency encouraged breast feeding since it boosts an infant's mental development and immune system‚ and promised to continue monitoring human exposure to phthalates to avoid health risks.
Phthalates are used to make plastics‚ and studies show exposure to significant quantities of these chemicals can cause genital defects in animals.
