A strong dust storm struck the city of Christchurch exacerbating the situation for residents already going through difficult times in the wake of last week's 6.3 magnitude earthquake.
Gusts of up to roughly 70 kilometers per hour stirred up an estimated 200-thousand metric tons of silt and dust‚ formed from a process called liquefaction‚ which loosens soil particles during an earthquake.
The quake also ruptured pipelines beneath the city… causing accumulated silt to gush out and pile in roads and parks throughout the area.
Meanwhile‚ authorities say… the gusty winds are causing problems for urban search and rescue teams or USAR.
USAR teams are generally able to operate in winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour‚… but if it goes beyond the limit they may need to consider suspending
operations.
The dust is also affecting the many Christchurch residents still in the city recuperating after the quake.

] "I think it's a pretty difficult RETINUE…there is a lot of people trying to go and help rebuild the community and get rid of silt and things like that‚ and that makes everything so much harder. And when the winds are like this and getting dust in your eyes that. So It would be good if it would stop‚ so we can get back on a track in Christchurch."
In the wake of the disaster‚ many have come to realize that the best way to overcome the difficulties before them is to accept what happened and start to rebuild their lives.
[Interview : Rob Krom‚ Entrepreneur] "I think people stop going outside‚ possibly because of the health problems are with the liquefaction drying out‚ dust in the air. I haven't been out and done any exercises for a week and I just to had to get outside and do something‚ because you would go crazy otherwise if you don't."
However‚ the Christchurch city council official said there have been a roughly 60 to 70 percent drop in outdoor activities in the city since the devastation‚ due to respiratory problem.
