In a bid to buffer protection against the North South Korea will deploy its 500MD light attack helicopters on islands in the West Sea bordering North Korea.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Wednesday that the planned deployment of 500MD helicopters is aimed at countering possible hovercraft infiltration by the North's special forces into one of the border islands.
Meanwhile‚ Seoul is also expected to receive an airborne early warning and control system‚ otherwise known as AWACS.. in June.
Seoul's Defense Ministry spent 1.6 billion US dollars on four AWACS aircraft in 2006.
The aircraft will enable the South Korean air force to watch the over the nation's skies without any downtime.
