Tuesday marks the 92nd anniversary of the March 1st independence uprising against Japan's colonialization of Korea.
Seodaemun Prison is the site where many Korean independence activists were imprisoned and tortured by the Japanese‚ including a young girl named Yu Gwan-sun ‚ often considered as the icon of the March 1st movement in 1919.
On this special day‚ many Koreans came out to visit historical sites and remember the sacrifices of their forefathers.

At this historical site‚ a reenactment of the independence movement took place with people waving Korea's national flag‚ Taegukgi‚ and shouting for the independence of Korea.
And a select group acting as the 33 representatives of the Korean people came on stage to recite the declaration of independence‚ reliving the important day that marks the beginning of Korea's liberation movement.

To give special memories of the day to the children‚ Seodaemun Prison prepared a variety of events and workshops‚ such as face painting and making one's own Taegukgi.

Seodaemun District Office] "On this special day‚ at this very site where the movement took place‚ we shouted for liberation of Korea as our ancestors have done. It was an event full of our people's independent spirit."
In 2011‚ Korea is its own country‚ enjoying the freedom to the fullest by practicing democracy and upholding human rights.
These privileges usually taken for granted by many are remembered as the fruits of labor and sacrifices of the earlier generations on March 1st.
