Almost half of the cities in Mexico have had at least one drug-related murder since President Felipe Calderon's administration came to power in December 2006.
According to the Reforma newspaper some 34‚000 people have been murdered in drug-related violence over the last four years or so.
Of Mexico's over 2‚400 cities over 1‚100 registered a murder by organized drug gangs.
Meanwhile‚ over 15‚000 people‚ including 14 mayors‚ were killed in drug-related violence last year.
Narcotics and the violence that comes with them is Mexico's most pressing social issue as wars between rival drug cartels continue to fuel the extremely high number of homicides the country.
