요약정보
Dressed up in neatly pressed brown uniforms‚ over 1-thousand security guards were sworn in to help curb violence and harassment at elementary schools in the capital Seoul.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday with Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon giving the opening speech.
Over 3-thousand people applied for the position‚ but only around a thousand made the final cut.
It was a rigorous process as they had to pass four sets of interviews and preliminary tests.
Ex-police officers made up the highest number of the finalists‚ followed by military officers.
The ceremony ended with reading the pledge and swearing to make schools a safer place for children.
Starting Wednesday‚ two security guards called "school sheriffs" will be stationed at over 500 public elementary schools in Seoul.
Funded by the city of Seoul‚ most of these sheriffs are retired with the average age being 59 years old but their young and energetic spirit was on full display.
[Interview : Kim Seong-deok‚ School sheriff] "I am a retired police officer. So using that experience I will do my best to make school a safe place for these kids."
They will be patrolling the grounds to check for any unusual activities and keeping an eye out on secluded areas of the school.
And any unidentified person will be immediately stopped and asked for identification‚ especially after school hours.
School officials say patrolling in conjunction with CCTV cameras will help catch bullying behavior as it happens and will also serve as a preventive measure for other crimes such as sexual harassment and child abduction.
And this is certainly music to the parents' ears.
[Interview : Hwang Soon-ok‚ Parent] "Last year there were some unfortunate incidents within the school‚ so as a parent I think this will ensure the children's safety. It definitely gives me peace of mind."
According to a recent survey by the Seoul city government‚ school security was the number one priority for parents.
[Interview : Kim Han-ul‚ chkim@arirang.co.kr] "Seoul city officials say the guards must complete 70 hours of mandatory training per year to effectively safeguard students and to prevent school crimes from happening.
