The Obama administration has made its most explicit statement yet that it wants to work with Congress to have its three pending trade deals approved this year.
US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner‚ speaking at a Senate Finance Committee hearing Wednesday said the prompt approval of trade agreements with Korea‚ Colombia and Panama would greatly benefit the US economy.
Geithner stressed that if Congress fails to pass the trade deals most American businesses "will go to other countries."
Wednesday's statement reflected the administration's commitment to resolving outstanding issues with Colombia and Panama.
Republicans have been pushing for all three pacts to be signed by July 1‚ but many Democrats remain opposed to the Colombia agreement.
