요약정보
Tuesday marks the fiftieth day since Yeonpyeong Island was bombarded by North Korea.
And all is quiet on the western island as the days of worldwide attention and around the clock media coverage as well as the sympathies for the Yeonpyeong victims has faded.
Some 300 of the 1‚400 residents now living here are going about their daily lives even with the scars of the shelling all around them.
A house‚ which had an artillery round fall in its bedroom has been patched up temporarily until full reconstruction can begin.
For its owner‚ the damaged appliances and even a metal shell from the artillery round still bring back frightening memories from the November attack.
[Interview : Kim Sung-jah
Yeonpyeong resident] "I was over in the living room and saw a flash of light and felt something fall. I looked around‚ and‚ as you can see‚ an artillery shell fell inside the room and smoke filled the house. I was so shocked and my mind went blank. And even a fire started to burn."
While national and local governments have been busy providing financial support as well as plans for a brighter future for Yeonpyeong‚ for those on the island dire days are continuing without much hope.
[Interview : Kim Young-soo‚ Yeonpyeong native] "I was born on this island and lived here since. I wish South Korean people living in other areas will appreciate us staying on Yeonpyeong despite the many difficulties. Already‚ 50 days have gone by and the bomb shelters have made some improvements but it is still far from complete. hope new measures will help us‚ so we can get back to the life we enjoyed before."
Heavy snowfall has covered the burned-out homes‚ but the fact that there are still those who boarded an evacuation ship without even an extra pair of socks and are unable to return is a reality that should not be overlooked.
[Reporter : Kang Seok-ho
kangsh@arirang.co.kr] "With 50 days now passed since the shelling‚ not much has changed here on Yeonpyeong Island. The government and the South Korean people must not forget that Yeonpyeong‚ on its way to recovery‚ still needs strong support and attention.
Kang Seok-ho‚ Arirang News‚ Yeonpyeong."
