요약정보
Socially marginalized people are easily forgotten from their communities.
And prisoners in particular‚ are often viewed as chronic offenders whom are unable to integrate back to the society.
But one Irish man has recently visited Korea to give hopes to the marginalized as well as assure the public that those people can be transformed when led the right way.
And we have Arirang News reporter Han Da-eun in the studio today to tell us more about this story. Hello Da-eun!
[Reporter : ] Hello Sean‚ Cunn-young.
A very special lecture took place in Seoul recently‚ which was presented by a man named Tom Magill.
Who is this guy
This movie titled‚ "Mickey B" is no ordinary movie.
It has garnered wide acclaim for its unique adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" winning the 2008 Roger Graef Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film.
But what's most surprising is that it was written and performed by 25 inmates inside a prison in Belfast‚ Northern Ireland 24 of whom are now still behind bars.
And the director of this groundbreaking film visited Korea this week to share the purpose of his film-in-jail project.
Sharing his first-hand experience of working with the imprisoned‚ Magill stressed that arts education‚ especially in drama and film‚ plays a significant role in understanding and transforming the lives of the prisoners as it teaches how to resolve conflicts‚ as well as help express guilt in a safe environment.
[Interview : Tom Magill‚ Co-founder
Educational Shakespeare Company ] "Macbeth is a story of ambition‚ betrayal‚ treachery and violence. That story is the story that the those people in the prison guys in the prison know very‚ very well indeed. So it speaks to them‚ it's relevant to them. I started involving marginalized people in drama and theater and film because of my own personal experience of it. I was a prisoner‚ who educated myself through cultural arts education and I knew if it worked for me‚ it could work for other people like me."
During his three-day visit‚ Magill showcased the movie to prison officers‚ legislative authorities as well as the civilians here to arouse public awareness that prisoners can change.
He emphasized that they can be integrated back to the society just like the others‚ as long as they are directed the right way‚ through appropriate methods.
[Interview : Yom Chan-hee‚ Movie Critic] "It was a fresh shock to me that the movie was made inside a prison. And the movie director's presentation made me view prisoners from a different angle."
[Interview : Kim Tae-hwang‚ Media Educator] "The movie was very impressive. But I have some doubts on whether our country can provide an identical environment for prisoners to come up with a piece like Mickey B."
[Reporter : Han Da-eun
daeun@arirang.co.kr ] "Various efforts are also taking place here in Korea to inspire marginalized people to transform their lives through art and cultural programs."
From choir practice to calligraphy classes‚ a host of government-backed music and art programs are being offered in more than 30 correctional institutions and juvenile training schools throughout the country.
But observers say that Korea is still in the learning process of engaging inmates in healthy cultural education that actually leads them to start making changes.
[Interview : Hwang Yeong-bog‚ School Guard
Kimcheon Juvenile Training School] "Through diverse programs offered in correctional institutions in Korea‚ the inmates and youngsters will be able to integrate back into society more easily. And I also think that Tom Magill's experiences will help us further develop methods of rehabilitating the marginalized through the arts."
Motivated individuals are striving to change society through the medium of the arts or as Tom Magill puts it to change the prisoners from "destructive ones to c
