Germany's coalition government on Sunday agreed on extending the lifespan of its existing 17 nuclear plants by an average of 12 years.
Under the agreement the older nuclear plants will continue to operate for eight more years beyond 2021 while the newer ones will be functional for an additional 14 years.
New taxes will be levied on the energy companies as a part of the deal thereby helping in the development of renewable sources of energy.
While acknowledging the fears regarding nuclear energy Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was required as a "bridge technology" until renewable sources were substantially developed.
[Interview : Angela Merkel
German Chancellor] "I know many people are very skeptical and critical about nuclear energy and we take these worries seriously. That's why we take the nuclear energy as a bridge technology‚ which means not longer than necessary. And also the companies must invest considerable amounts in security measures over the next years‚ because security is a priority and we already today have the most secure nuclear plants in the world."
This new course of action reverses the decision by the previous government wherein all the existing nuclear plants were scheduled to be phased out by 2021.
The nuclear plant deal has not yet been signed and sealed and it is likely to face stiff opposition when it goes for a vote in the upper house of parliament where Merkel's government has no majority.
