Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano has been elected as the new head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Mr. Amano won a tight race against South Africa's Abdul Samad Minty‚ collecting 23 votes‚ barely a two-thirds majority needed to become the head of the UN nuclear watchdog.
The election seemed to reflect divisions between developed and developing nations with the US backing Amano who among other things promised to de-politicize the IAEA.
Amano is expected to replace Mohamed ElBaradei who is stepping down in November after three four-year terms.
