It turns out a popular cosmetic procedure in Korea may hold the key to curing diabetes.
Double eyelid surgery‚ which involves removing fat from under the eyelids and stitching the skin along the horizontal incision above the eye line is a common procedure in Korea.
In the past‚ the fat removed during this surgery was discarded‚ but scientists have found that it contains abundant amounts of neural stem cells‚ or multipotent cells.
[Reporter : Jang Ji-yun
jiyun.jang@arirang.co.kr] "A team of researchers in Korea claim to have developed a cure for diabetes using stem cells extracted from fatty tissue in human eyelids."
The research led by professor Kim Hae-kwon at Seoul Women's University is currently being regarded as a potential breakthrough in Type 1 diabetes treatment.
Scientists here manipulated stem cells retrieved from the human eyelid to specifically secrete insulin.
Then transplanted the insulin-secreting cells to immunocompetent diabetic mice and found that out of 20 test subjects 10 made full recoveries‚ while maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
[Interview : Kim Hae-kwon‚ Biotechnology Prof.
Seoul Women's University] "After testing all kinds of fatty tissues in our bodies‚ we have come to the conclusion that the fat under our eyelids have the most amount of neural stem cells capable of producing vast amounts of insulin-secreting cells. And because the mice we tested had perfectly normal immune systems‚ we are more than hopeful that the treatment will work on humans as well."
According to the professor‚ there have been numerous cases where scientists used human neural stem cells to cure diabetic mice‚ but in those instances the treatment was carried out indirectly‚ meaning the injected stem cells only helped to boost pancreatic cells
