Former President Roh was honest and frank‚ often dubbed a maverick for attempts at political reform.
We take a look at his life‚ which opened up a whole new chapter in Korean politics.
Roh Moo-hyun was born in 1946 in Bongha Village‚ South Gyeongsang Province.
He was the youngest in a family of 3 sons and 2 daughters.
From an early age‚ he showed promise as a student with his remarkable intellect.
However‚ his family's poverty led him to give up his dreams of attending university.
The former President passed the national bar examinations in 1975 through self-education.
After defending students who had been tortured for possession of contraband literature‚ he becomes a human rights lawyer dealing in labor issues.
Since then‚ he was at the forefront of the movements for democratization‚ often finding himself at the frontlines of a strike.
Upon being invited to join the Democratic Reunification Party by Kim Young-sam‚ the former party leader‚ Roh entered politics.
During the hearings for the 5th Republic‚ Roh gained recognition for his sharp‚ direct questioning.
However‚ he split from former President Kim Young-sam in 1991 when Roh opposed the unification of three parties.
He ran in the Pusan elections‚ but repeatedly tasted failure as a politician.

In 2001‚ he was appointed the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
In March 2002‚ he became the hope for a new‚ participatory politics as he won the candidacy in the Democratic Party.
His calls for national unity and political reform wrought a response from the public‚ and he is elected as the 16th President of the Republic of Korea.

During his term in office‚ former President Roh challenged the taboos of Korean society‚ fighting for equal opportunity and to break down regional populism in politics.
However‚ the division of the Democratic Party‚ his impeachment‚ the grand coalition government and the Korea-US FTA.
All of these political experiments and his maverick comments pushed him into a corner.
The National Assembly's attempt to impeach President Roh saw his executive powers suspended for 63 days.
"I carry a greater load than when I first came to office."
After his many trials‚ the former President had a shining moment when he successfully held the second inter-Korean summit.
Other achievements of his pro-working class presidency include the dissolution of regional politics and strides in democratic reform.
However‚ his term ended in 2008 before his achievements could be properly evaluated.
Breaking away from authoritative tendencies and political reform were tasks that were not completed when President Roh retired to his hometown of Bongha village.
"Some say I have done well‚ some say I have done badly.
All I can say is that I worked hard."
As the first President to return to his birthplace upon retirement‚ Roh set out two tasks for himself; reinvigorating the rural community and developing a participatory democracy.
He ushered in a new era of presidential retirement.
Roh also showed his continued commitment and interest to political developments through his on-line activities.
However‚ one year into his retirement‚ he became the third former President to be investigated for allegations of corruption.
Roh's clean image‚ the bedrock of his political career‚ suffered a huge blow.
Roh was unconventional‚ passionate and frank.
