Will the United Nations Security Council's presidential statement condemning North Korea's missile quest be strong enough to persuade Pyeongyang to renounce its old habit[Interview : Susan Rice‚ US Ambassador to the UN] "The draft that has been shared clearly and unequivocally condemns the launch of April 5th. It makes it plain that this launch contravenes Security Council Resolution 1718."
But proponents of the draft presidential statement say the document does more than "condemn" North Korea's rocket stunt.
The UN statement calls for the strict enforcement of the 2006 resolution which imposes financial and trade sanctions on the communist state.
The UN Security Council plans to by the end of the month update its blacklist of companies suspected of shady dealings with the North and freeze their assets.
The global security body will also expand its laundry list of trade items banned from entering or leaving North Korea including military technology and luxury goods.
In a rare show of defiance against Pyeongyang's saber-rattling‚ Seoul is about to take a firmer stand against its rocket launch even though that could escalate cross-border tensions.
The South is now seriously considering joining a global campaign against the trafficking of weapons of mass destruction known as the Proliferation Security Initiative as a wholly committed member.
South Korea says it will announce its next step this week with regards to the PSI membership after the UN Security Council has ruled on the draft president's statement.
