Major Asian economies have decided to expand the initial Chiang Mai Initiative worth 80 billion US dollars to 120 billion as many Asian currencies have weakened over the past year.
The finance ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus Japan‚ China and Korea came to this agreement at the finance ministers' meeting in Phuket‚ Thailand over the weekend. This multilateral currency swap program will guarantee funds to any of the 13 participating countries in need.
Korea‚ Japan and China will provide about 80 percent of the foreign currency pool‚ while the 10 ASEAN members will contribute the rest.
