A violent street protest broke out Monday in Thailand's capital Bangkok leaving one person dead and almost 40 people wounded.
The clash between supporters of the government and members of the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy escalated as the pro-government group made its way towards the Government House the Prime Minister's office compound yelling that it would "reclaim it."
The anti-government group who is demanding that Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej step down from his post has occupied the Government House for the past week.
Approximately 500 pro-Samak supporters made it as far as 800 meters from the residence before hitting a barricade of police and members of the PAD.
The conflict quickly turned violent when both sides viciously attacked one another with sticks slingshots and batons.
Protestors from both parties crossed police lines throwing gasoline bombs and stones.
According to the head of Bangkok's police emergency unit one man was killed by a blunt object during the chaos and over 30 have sustained injuries of those two are suffering from gunshot wounds.
Order was later restored with the help of over 400 armed soldiers and riot police.
Meanwhile as a means to further pressure Prime Minister Samak to resign a coalition of 43 public sector unions have announced a nationwide strike will start Wednesday.
In related news Korean tourists who were stranded at Phuket International Airport over the weekend in the wake of anti-government protests finally made it home on Monday.
