요약정보
The Korean government's efforts appear to have paid off.
The US federal agency responsible for setting geographic names has reinstated Dokdo as Korean territory.
US President George W. Bush played a crucial role in reversing that decision made last week.
Ahn Jisu has our top story.
The United States Board on Geographic Names reinstated Korea's sovereignty over the Dokdo islets early Thursday morning‚ Korea time.
This revision came after Korea's ambassador to the US Lee Taesik spoke directly with US President George W. Bush on Tuesday‚ expressing Seoul's dismay over the changed sovereignty status of Dokdo.
President Bush told a Korean television news network that he instructed the US State Department to restore Korea's sovereignty over the islets on the federal body's website‚ which was completed in about three hours time.
[INTERVIEW : Moon Taeyoung ‚Foreign Ministry Spokesman‚] ''Our government welcomes President Bush's interest and the fact that he allowed this correction to take place.''
The Korean government has put a lot of effort into reinstating the islets as official Korean territory since its status was changed to ''Undesignated Sovereignty'' on the US agency's website almost a week ago.
Korea's ambassador to the US met with top Washington officials earlier in the week‚ including US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte.
A group of Korean lawmakers also met with officials in the United States and personally paid a visit to the US Board on Geographic Names.
With President Bush holding talks with President Lee Myung-bak in Seoul next week‚ many wondered if the Dokdo issue would be included as part of the summit agenda.
Although this matter has been resolved‚ government officials say the issue is still likely to be discussed during the summit talks although not as part of the official agenda.
After the islets' status were changed back to Korean territory‚ US Ambassador to Korea Alexander Vershbow met with Foreign Minister Yu Myunghwan on Thursday afternoon.
[INTERVIEW : Alexander Vershbow‚US Ambassador to Korea] ''This is a very serious misunderstanding. And we're happy that we've changed the website back to the way it was a week ago. Throughout this whole issue‚ the US position has not changed. We're looking forward to a very good visit by President Bush next week.''
Ambassador Vershbow said during the Lee-Bush summit‚ numerous issues related to the Korea-US alliance would be worked out and stressed that the North Korean nuclear issue would be at the top of the list.
[REPORTER : Ahn Jisu] ''The Korean government says there are still issues that need to be resolved. The islets are still referred to as the ''Liancourt Rocks'' by the US naming authority and Ambassador Lee says the goal is to change their name back to Dokdo‚ which is what they were called until 1977.
