Two of Korea's liberal parties have agreed to merge ahead of the April general elections coming under a single banner.
The United New Democratic Party and the minor Democratic Party announced the decision to merge Monday in their struggle to prevent the conservative Grand National Party from sweeping the April elections.
The merger of the two liberal camps creates a party holding 141 seats in the 299-member National Assembly.
Also in the news lawmaker Chough Soonhyung who bolted from the Democratic Party protesting the proposed merger has joined up with the Liberty Forward Party‚ recently founded by three-time presidential candidate Lee Hoichang.
Chough is known for taking a leading role in the move to impeach incumbent President Roh Moohyun in 2003.
