요약정보
Down in Korea's Jeju Island work has begun for a grand facility housing theme parks‚ resorts and more.
The first phase in the project is a Myth and History theme park that will be the first of its kind in Korea.
Lee Jeewon reports.
Drizzle didn't stop some 500 businessmen‚ investors‚ and residents of Jeju Island from attending the groundbreaking ceremony of the Myth & History Theme Park.
''A Chinese philosopher once said a journey of 1‚000 miles begins with one step. Well‚ this is that one step for our project in Jeju.''
The 1.5-billion-U.S.-dollar project‚ which will stretch over four billion square meters of land‚ is scheduled to be completed by 2011.
A government-funded organization in charge of the project tells Arirang News the theme park initially planned for introducing Korea's mythology and history will be something more.
''The land allocated to myth and history theme park was too big for just that. That's why we divided the area into three zones‚ each leading its individual projects.''
The A-zone‚ developed by American investors‚ will include movie and water theme parks and a hotel.
Centering around China Town will be the H-zone‚ a food court of international cuisines and beverages.
The J-zone by Malaysia's Berjaya Group will be a theme park of world mythologies.
''We believe it's a very new kind of experience for visitors.''
While the project vows to make the facility one of a kind‚ its plans of including fine-dining‚ exploratory retail and entertainment for all age groups rings familiar to many theme-park goers.
Whatever the theme park's focus may be it hopes to revive the island's economy by hiring some 62-hundred people and eventually generating 2.5 billion U.S. dollars.
It's also expected to be a welcomed addition to Jeju‚ which depends heavily on its scenery and museums for its tourism industry.
