요약정보
Korea is fast becoming a multi-ethnic society with a growing number of foreigners emigrating here.
Among those who call Korea their permanent home are foreign women who are married to Koreans.
In a bid to make the cultural transition easier the Korean government held a special meeting this past week.
Nam Kiyung tells us about it.
Cross-border reunions of families separated after the Korean War are a regular occurrence in Korea.
This week however a new kind of reunion took place in Seoul when the government invited 90 parents from the Philippines‚ Vietnam and Thailand to see their daughters and Korean sons-in-law.
''The reunion is taking place ahead of the International Migrants Day on December 18th and in line with a special law enacted by the National Assembly this year for better treatment of foreign women married to Korean men living here.''
In May lawmakers passed legislation on treatment of foreigners residing in Korea to improve the welfare of more than 110-thousand foreign spouses living in Korea.
The parents had a lot of catching up to do as some hadn't seen their daughters for almost half a decade.
For some every minute was dedicated to getting to know their grandchildren after meeting them for the first time.
''When I saw my parents at the airport I was elated‚ but at the same time‚ I was overcome by sadness because my mother had aged so much. My parents wanted to visit me here but they couldn't because of their financial burden.''
With three kids to support making ends meet is a real challenge for Hakarn and her husband in a country where a Korean parent spends on average a quarter of a million U.S. dollars per kid until he or she graduates from college.
''It's been seven years since I last saw my daughter. I love her so much. The trip was made possible thanks to the Korean government. I never imagined that this day would come.''
''If I could stop the hands of time‚'' Delapena says at the airport on the last day of the five-day reunion.
Delapena says her mind is at peace now that she knows her daughter is doing well.
When the parents are instructed to get their boarding passes ready‚ they reluctantly comply after reassuring their daughters and grandchildren that they will meet again.
''With interracial marriages in rural areas more pronounced the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs says it will continue working closely with local governments to make these women feel right at home away from home.
